Oral Iron Therapy for Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction
نویسندگان
چکیده
Impaired exercise capacity is a cardinal manifestation of heart failure (HF) that is closely related to reduced quality of life and poor outcomes. Therapeutic options beyond neurohormonal blockade to improve functional capacity and symptoms in HF are currently limited and must be pursued. Iron deficiency is associated with reduced functional capacity and poorer quality of life in HF. Here, a rationale for oral iron repletion in patients with HF and iron deficiency is provided with an overview of the study design for the Iron Repletion effects on Oxygen Uptake in Heart Failure (IRONOUT HF) trial, which aims to study the effect of oral iron repletion on functional capacity in patients with HF and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Effect of Exercise Training on Heart Rate Variability in Patients with Heart Failure After Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
Background: This study aims to evaluate the effect of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) and to determine the correlation between parameters of HRV and the ejection fraction in patients with heart failure after percutaneous coronary intervention.Material and Methods: Fifty patients with left ventricular ejection fraction ≤ 40% undergone percutaneous coronary intervention were r...
متن کاملThe Relation between Left Ventricular Function and Serum Ferritin in Major Β-Thalassemia
Abstract Objective Cardiac dysfunction is a major cause of death in patients with beta thalassemia. In these patients, repeated blood transfusion, ineffective erythropoiesis and increased gastrointestinal iron absorption lead to iron overload in the body and this induced heart failure. Left ventricular ejection fraction was measured in major beta thalassemia (β-Th) patients to detect the rela...
متن کاملOral Iron Therapy for Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction: Design and Rationale for Oral Iron Repletion Effects on Oxygen Uptake in Heart Failure.
UNLABELLED : Iron deficiency is present in ≈50% of patients with heart failure and is an independent predictor of mortality. Despite growing recognition of the functional and prognostic significance of iron deficiency, randomized multicenter trials exploring the use of oral iron supplementation in heart failure, a therapy that is inexpensive, readily available, and safe, have not been performed...
متن کاملIron Chelation Therapy for Treatment of Cardiac Hemochromatosis
Hemochromatosis is a clinical syndrome caused by abnormal accumulation of iron in parenchymal organs leading to organ toxicity and dysfunction. Cardiac hemochromatosis is a cardiomyopathy due to primary iron-overload cardiomyopathy which causes congestive heart failure. Patients with cardiac hemochromatosis may be asymptomatic early in the disease. Once heart failure develops, there is rapid de...
متن کاملIron therapy for the treatment of iron deficiency in chronic heart failure: intravenous or oral?
This article considers the use and modality of iron therapy to treat iron deficiency in patients with heart failure, an aspect of care which has received relatively little attention compared with the wider topic of anaemia management. Iron deficiency affects up to 50% of heart failure patients, and is associated with poor quality of life, impaired exercise tolerance, and mortality independent o...
